Cumulative Trauma Disorder (CTD) Reference Guide

Illness / Injury

Other Names

Primary Area Affected

Type

Symptoms

Bursitis

Shoulder, Elbow

Connective Tissue

Grinding sensation

Pain or irritation

Restricted motion

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

CTS

Writer's Cramp

Occupational

Neuritis

Partial Thenar Atrophy

Median Neuritis

Fingers 1-3, anterior and posterior hand/wrist (Symptoms often refer up the median nerve pathway, causing pain/dysfunction in the elbow, shoulder, upper-back and neck, which subside when CTS is eliminated)

Nerve

Pain, tingling, numbness, and/or paresthesia in fingers 1-4.  (Thumb, index, middle and medial-half of ring finger).

Symptoms consisting of a general ache, or shooting pain are often present on the backside of the hand/wrist.

Increase in symptoms while sleeping at night.

In advanced stages of CTS, symptoms may include atrophy of the thumb muscles (Thenar Eminence).

CTS is usually caused by a muscle imbalance between specific muscle groups (flexors, extensors, internal and external rotators, adductors and abductors)

Ganglion Cyst

Bible Bump

Wrist / Hand

Connective tissue

Bump or concentrated swelling resulting from synovial fluid leaking from an injured tendon into, the surrounding soft-tissues which eventually encapsulates the fluid and becomes a cyst.

This type of injury is usually caused by repetitive stress or direct trauma to the affected area.

Golfer's Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis)

Tendonitis

Medial (inside) of the elbow

Connective Tissue

Pain or irritation on the inside of the elbow, often radiating down the arm, often resulting in the compression of the ulnar nerve and causing numbness, tingling and/or paresthesia in fingers 4-5.  (Ring and little fingers)

Medial Epicondylitis is often the result of a muscle imbalance between the finger, wrist and elbow flexors / extensors.

Myositis

Muscle Inflammation

Hand, Forearm and Upper-Arm (Upper Extremity)

Muscle

Generalized aching, soreness and fatigue.

Raynaud's Syndrome

Raynaud's Phenomenon, Raynaud's Disease, Vibration Syndrome

Fingers / Hands

Vascular

Unusual sensitivity to cold

Pale white or blue hands, particularly following exposure to cold

Occasional tingling or numbness. Can lead to loss of sensation & control.

Rotator Cuff

Tendonitis

Supraspinatus, Tendinitis

Subdeltoid Bursitis

Subscromial Bursitis

Shoulder

Connective Tissue

Irritation / inflammation in the shoulder causing a generalized ache, stabbing, or shooting pain, and poor range of motion if the injury is acute or sub-acute.

This is often the cause of muscle imbalance, which causes the shoulder to shift forward and impinge the Bursa, Supraspinatus and /or Subscapularis muscles. (Often the result of tight chest muscles and weak back muscles)

Tennis elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis)

Tendonitis

Bowler's Elbow

Pitcher's Elbow

Outside of the elbow

Connective Tissue

Pain or irritation on the outside of the elbow, often radiating down the arm, often resulting in the compression of the radial nerve and causing numbness, tingling and/or paresthesia in fingers 4-5.  (Ring and little fingers)

Lateral Epicondylitis is often the result of a muscle imbalance between the finger, wrist and elbow flexors / extensors.

Tenosynovitis

Peritendinitis

Any tendon

Connective Tissue

Pain or irritation, particularly while using the hand or arm

Swelling can occur.

Stenosing Tenosynovitis

Any tendon

Connective Tissue

Pain or irritation

Can result in uneven movement of fingers (see Trigger finger).

De Quervain's Disease

De Quervain's Syndrome, De Quervain's Disorder

Side and MP (base) joint of thumb

Connective Tissue

Aching in affected area.

Weakness in thumb.

Loss of muscle tone (muscle atrophy).

Trigger finger

Stenosin Tenosynovitis

Fingers

Connective Tissue

Pain in the affected finger, wrist and/or forearm.

Snapping or jerking movement of one or more fingers.

Finger(s) is always in a partially flexed position at the MP, PIP or DIP joints (Which can be straightened /stretched manually), or has a tendency of randomly locking in a flexed-downward position in the palm of the hand.

Tendonitis

Tendonitis

Fingers, Wrist, Elbow and Shoulder

Connective Tissue

General ache, shooting/stabbing pain of the affected area.

Inflammation and swelling in acute / sub-acute levels of injury

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

TOS

Neurovascular Compression Syndrome

Cervicobrachial Disorder

Brachial Plexus Neuritis

Costoclavicular Syndrome

Fingers (fingers 1-5), hand, wrist, elbow, shoulder and neck.

Neurovascular

Tingling and/or numbness in all of the fingers (1-5), possible hand dysfunction, often with referral pain in the shoulder and neck.

In severe cases muscle atrophy may be present in the hands.

Pale or bluish hands (as in Raynaud's syndrome).

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome

Impingement of the ulnar nerve at the elbow as it passes through the Cubital Tunnel.

Cubital Outlet Syndrome

Cubital Canal Syndrome

Elbow, forearm, hands, ring finger, little finger.

Nerve

Pain, tingling, numbness located on the medical (inside) portion of the elbow, often referring these symptoms up and / or down the nerve pathway.  The symptoms of numbness and / or tingling mostly affect the little finger (Pinky), one-half of the ring finger.

Guyon's Syndrome

Impingement of ulnar nerve at the wrist as it passes through the Guyons Canal.

Guyon's Canal Syndrome

Ring and little fingers, wrist (Pinky side).

Nerve

Symptoms include pain, tingling, numbness located on the ulnar side (pinky) of the hand/wrist, often referring these symptoms up and / or down the nerve pathway.  The symptoms of numbness and / or tingling mostly affect the little finger (Pinky), one-half of the ring finger.
